The Lost Recipes of Belle Époque

Melbourne Food and Wine Festival

Step through the doors of Smith St Bistrot and into a culinary time capsule – an ode to Paris’s Belle Époque, the city’s golden age of food, art and opulence that flourished before World War I reshaped the world.

The menu revives dishes once served in legendary institutions such as Café de Paris and Le Grand Véfour, where the great chefs of the time reigned. Expect the likes of chicken-liver and foie gras parfait with Sauternes jelly, quenelles de brochet with lobster and sauce Américaine, and saddle of lamb Belle Époque. Some recipes had all but vanished, others slipped between the pages of history – until now.

With period music, historical storytelling, and dishes revived from the city’s golden age, this is a delicious historical resurrection.

This Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, we invite you to Little Bourke, Big Bites – the ultimate food crawl designed to thrill your palate and showcase a full spectrum of flavour. Three venues. Three cocktails. Nine flavour-charged snacks. One continuous, city-lit experience.

This special food crawl begins at Daughter In Law. Jessi Singh’s menu brings spice, colour and a dash of mischief, with three bold snacks and a signature cocktail to get things moving. Stop two is Ho Chi Mama where music, flavour and vibes are dialled high, setting the stage for the next leg of your adventure. The final destination is Melbourne institution, Longrain. This is where the evening comes full circle: expressive cocktails and three confident, modern Thai snacks that show why Longrain remains a cornerstone of Melbourne’s food scene.
